Kingston Garden

31" x 21", Oil on Canvas

“Kingston Garden #1”

Bouganvillea all over town blazing color in the summer heat, a heat everyone is feeling wearing them down….With this painting, and other bougainvillea I’m currently working on, I want the color to communicate that sweltering burn the tropical heat creates. 31″ x 21″, Oil on Canvas

Timelessness….

36″ x 48″, oil on canvas

Spring brings the agapanthus, and in sketching them in watercolor and then in oil, the garden of my daughters’ childhood surfaced, appearing as if in a dream, being painted in an effortlessness that comes from an authentic place deep in my own soul….for this place was home for a decade, and if anything represents this special place, it is the agapanthus in Spring….

Two or three sessions with this piece so far, and hopefully not much more as I really don’t want to overwork what has emerged so easily….

Having such a good time painting in oil…

For 10 years I lived in an old house in Mandeville, and like so many of those old houses in that misty hilly town, it was surrounded by a large lawn that had many borders and beds of agapanthus. Known as Mandeville lilies as they thrive in the cool damp climate there, there were thousands of them. They towered over my young daughters as they played amongst them like little fairies, and many a Springtime birthday party was festooned with these flamboyant flowers, adding to the festivities with flair and flounce! Hey, it’s my blog and I can alliterate all I like…

On the road again

In March of this year  Young at Art teamed with the fabulous Nikki Delicious of Montego Bay to offer a workshop on her veranda, introducing the fundamentals of painting a face to North Coasters. It was so successful we were asked to  repeat the workshop to a (mostly) new group, and so we returned this weekend to the lovely setting of her home and garden.

Painting Studio by the Pool and Patio

Beginning on Saturday morning with how to mix colors and tones, and how to use brushes effectively to apply paint well, unique pieces were created with a limited palette. Below are the results:

Group discussion

Taking a break for lunch, we returned to learn the fundamentals of drawing a face  objectively, and seeing tonal values.

Focus and concentration

We finished up Day 1 with some lovely pencil studies of faces, for many students their first attempt at seeing the face as a series of shapes, and adapting to a new way of seeing. Tiring but satisfying work.

Sunday morning we began with a demonstration of painting a face, using the paint mixing and application lesson from the day before to render a face with smooth clean colors.

Agapanthus time!

Agapanthus #2

Agapanthus #2

The very lovely Ashley welcomed me to her hillside garden up in the Blue Mountains, this being the short season of agapanthus, and as not a one of these fair lilies is able to survive the heat of Kingston, it’s up to the hills one must go to be in their midst. When I lived in Mandeville  there were thousands of these long-stemmed blue flowers in my garden, and every Springtime they rioted!  Dozens of white ones thrived too, once I gave them their own bed away from their blue brothers, growing tall and proud. I love these plants, and want to do them justice. The sketching in watercolor has begun….
